A Mix of Modern and Traditional Retail Strategies Required to Sell to Emerging Markets
To get products to customers in emerging markets, global manufacturers need strategies for navigating both the traditional and the modern retail landscapes.
Tesla Drives Into Litigation When It Opens Own Stores Rather Than Sell Through Independent Dealers
When electric-car company Tesla Motors Inc. started selling its flagship Model S luxury hatchback earlier this year, it eschewed the traditional dealership network to open its own stores. That's not sitting well with U.S. auto dealers, who have controlled new-vehicle sales for nearly a century. Some are suing the new entrant.
Risk Management: Making the Right Choices
The topic of supply-chain risk management is fraught with agonizing questions. Should global businesses emphasize risk prevention, or steel themselves to respond to whatever disaster might occur? Should they seek to transfer risk, or concentrate on achieving better risk-management up front? Should they attempt to do all of the above? The wrong answer can mean the death of an organization.
You Need to Completely Re-Think Your Approach to Packaging, Report Says
Achieving breakthrough improvements in sustainable packaging is more difficult than simply substituting one material for another. In fact, for many, the mere mention of the term can bring to mind flimsy plastic water bottles and noisy chip bags, designs with laudable intent but a high potential for detracting from the customer experience, according to a Deloitte report called "Thinking Outside the Box: Throw Away Your Current Approach to Packaging."
How to Align Supply Chain Capability and IT Systems
Every company possesses supply-chain capabilities and supporting IT systems. But they often don't mesh. Roddy Martin, senior vice president of global supply chain with CCI, calculates the price of misalignment - and lays out a strategy for combating the chronic problem.
Trumpet Your Company's Efforts on Corporate Social Responsibility, Report Says
When it comes to corporate social responsibility, consumers want more than aspirational mission statement, according to research by Cone Communications. They want to know what companies are doing.
For Lean Initiative to Succeed, It Helps if the CEO Is an Expert on Lean
Legendary lean practitioner Art Byrne says he didn't have to accept excuses from employees when he requested dramatic improvements on the plant floor. That's because Byrne had become a "lean expert" and knew what type of changes were possible. There's a big difference between CEOs who engage in lean and those who simply encourage it.
You Must Know Suppliers' Capabilities Up Front or Your Product Launch Could Fail
Building solid supplier relationships and focusing on value creation can help supply managers discover strategic suppliers' unique capabilities.
Robots Come to the Family Dairy Farm - and Milk the Cows
After Steve and Lori Dockendorf's two oldest children left their dairy farm to go to college, the husband-and-wife owners of a 100-cow farm in Watkins, Minn., had to figure out how to replace the labor they'd lost. The traditional solution would have been to hire a couple of extra hands. Instead, the Dockendorfs went with robots: robots to help feed the cows, robots to help clean the barn, even robots that can milk the cows.

The 'New' Internet Demands That Every Business 'Go Digital'
Every business needs to "go digital." Data about customers, competitors, suppliers and employees are exploding. Ninety percent of all data were created in the past two years. By 2016, there will be 3 billion internet users globally, and the internet economy will reach $4.2tr in the G-20 nations. No company or country can afford to ignore this phenomenon.
IBM Tops Newsweek Poll of Greenest U.S. Companies
IBM has been recognized for the second consecutive year as the greenest company in the U.S., according to the Newsweek 2012 Green Rankings survey. A panel of independent judges ranked major companies based on numerous criteria, including their environmental impact, environmental management and sustainability disclosure. The survey is regarded as one of the most comprehensive analyses of environmental leadership, and IBM was one of 500 large U.S. organizations evaluated.
