U.K., China Clear Unlimited Cargo Flights
An agreement this month to remove limits on the number of cargo flights between the United Kingdom and China is an encouraging signal that post-Brexit policy makers are serious about exploring, or expanding, trade routes outside of the Euro zone, said the U.K.'s Transport Minister Chris Grayling. In addition to unlimited cargo flights, the number of permitted passenger flights under the agreement will be raised from 40 to 100 per week.
California's Proposed Regulations May Slow Progress on Driverless Cars
California's proposed rules for self-driving vehicles got another road test last week, as vehicle makers and industry groups expressed concern at a public workshop that the Department of Motor Vehicles' regulations could slow development of the technology and conflict with more flexible federal guidelines.
DB Schenker, Lufthansa Reportedly Halfway to 2020 Emissions Reduction Target
A five-year plan from Lufthansa Cargo and logistics provider DB Schenker to reduce carbon dioxide emissions is on track to meet its goal of reducing 20,000 tonnes of CO2 output by 2020, both companies say. To date, Lufthansa and Schenker have reduced their CO2 output by more than 10,000 tonnes, combined, under their joint Carbon Reduction Agreement.
As China's Economy Slows, Experts Worry What Comes Next
China reported this week that its economy grew 6.7 percent in the third quarter compared with a year ago. That matched economists' expectations exactly, and was identical to the pace China set in the first and second quarters of this year. In economics, stability like that is remarkable - and usually not to be believed.
AmeriQuest Survey Results Show Confusion Surrounding Procurement
Many purchasing professionals do not have clarity about the purchasing practices of their companies, according to a recent Google survey conducted by AmeriQuest Business Services. Fifteen percent of respondents said they didn't know which department manages procurement, the survey says, despite being directly involved in the process.
Pitney Bowes Survey Finds Majority of Global Consumers Shop Cross Border
More than two-thirds of consumers who have ever made a domestic online purchase have also made an online purchase from another country in the past year, according to an annual online shopping survey by Pitney Bowes, an e-commerce technology company. Singapore (89 percent), Australia (86 percent) and Hong Kong (85 percent) have the highest number of cross-border shoppers, while countries like Japan (34 percent) and the U.S. (45 percent) are still growing in cross-border confidence.
Investments in Analytics Technology Save Time, Money on Financial Planning, Survey Says
It might not come as much of a surprise to learn that the more companies spend on analytics technology, the better the performance of their financial planning and analysis functions. What might be less intuitive is just how extreme the advantage is when using more FP&A-oriented technology, according to a survey by the Association for Finance Professionals.
Study Shows Profit But Low Priority in Sustainable Supply Chain
According to a 2015 World Economic Forum study, organizations can increase revenue up to 20 percent and boost brand value up to 30 percent by investing in supply chain sustainability. But are organizations taking action to realize these benefits? And if so, how?
Drone Company Launches Healthcare Delivery Service in Rwanda
A drone service delivering blood for transfusions has been launched by the president of Rwanda. The drones are expected to make between 50 and 150 life-saving deliveries a day to remote and inaccessible clinics across the western half of the country, according to Zipline, the company behind the technology.
IoT Devices Becoming More Common Hosts for Hijacked Data, Researchers Say
The vision of the so-called internet of things - giving all sorts of physical things a digital makeover - has been years ahead of reality. But that gap is closing fast, according to Gartner, a research firm. Today, the range of things being computerized and connected to networks is stunning, from watches, appliances and clothing to cars, jet engines and factory equipment. Even roadways and farm fields are being upgraded with digital sensors. In the last two years, the number of internet-of-things devices in the world has surged nearly 70 percent to 6.4 billion, Gartner says. By 2020, the firm forecasts, the internet-of-things population will reach 20.8 billion.
Seaport Group Pressures IMO to Act on Emissions
A range of shipping organizations are putting pressure on the International Maritime Organization to act on air emissions ahead of the marine environmental committee meeting (MEPC 70) in late October. The meeting is scheduled to discuss policy measures for the shipping sector in terms of CO2 reduction and whether or not to postpone the global 0.5 percent sulfur cap planned for 2020.
Cybersecurity Insurance Becoming a Must-Have, Survey Says
A September survey by the Risk and Insurance Management Society found that 80 percent of the companies bought a stand-alone cybersecurity policy in 2016, suggesting policies covering exclusively cyber exposures may now be the norm for many large companies.
