Consumer Packaged Goods: Page 196
Is Your 'Path to Purchase' a Trail or Superhighway?
Analyst Insight: While e-commerce is buzzing, it's still only 6 percent of total U.S. retail spend. For CPG companies, the Online Search to Offline Purchase (O2O) market (30 percent to 40 percent of retail spend) growth is driven by mobile commerce. Some 74 percent of smartphone owners use their device while shopping with 79 percent ultimately making a purchase as a result, according to Retailigence. As the "moment of truth" shifts to the "point of demand", more information is available to support supply chain decisions. – Rich Sherman, author and founder at Gold & Domas Research
Consumer Products Companies Can Be Multichannel, Too
Analyst Insight: Consumer products companies are making far greater use of alternative sales channels than ever before. They are proactively reaching out to customers, whether in B2B or B2C environments, to gain share of mind and increase sales. Consumer products companies have also become much more active using their own websites and utilizing marketplaces as a means to increase their product's visibility and availability to potential customers. – Bruce Tompkins, Executive Director, Tompkins Supply Chain Consortium
In Retail Demand Planning, The Numbers Can Lie
Retail demand planning is, to a great extent, a game of numbers. But the store that relies entirely on hard statistics is likely to be in for an unpleasant surprise.
High-Tech Leader De-Risks Revenue and TTM Goals with Resilinc SCRM
Challenge: A $15B networking equipment provider lacked visibility to their multi-tier supply chain, could not easily identify and assess risks such as supplier "hot spots" and single points of failure, and was unable to assess risks by part, commodity, category, BUs, location, revenue impact and TTR. Finally, their process for proactive risk mitigation and re-active automated response was inadequate.
The True State of Global Connectedness
Global trade: Love it or hate it. But don't overestimate its impact on individual economies.

Making the Most of Supply Chain's Seat at the Strategy Table
Analyst Insight: Companies spent over $400bn on external management consultants in 2013 with a majority on strategy development and implementation. This figure shows companies struggle to develop and retain strategy as a skill in the talent toolbox. As a pioneer of process engineering and continuous improvement, supply chain has already proven to be an organization that can break complex problems down into simple, repeatable steps. It's now our turn to do the same with strategy. – Matt Davis, SVP Research at SCM World
Automakers Are Bound to Design, Build and Sell Anywhere
Analyst Insight: Car ownership in developing economies is on the rise. By 2020, annual world vehicle production could reach 85 to 90 million units. That will mean another 75 to 100 plants, each producing around 300,000 cars a year, will be needed, essentially in or close to the world's fastest-developing countries. Automakers have to create new global production strategies to serve these multiple diverse markets. – Pierfrancesco Manenti, Vice President, Research, SCM World
Mobile Commerce More Likely to Help Than Harm In-store Sales - if Harnessed Properly
The buzz about the threat of mobile/e-commerce to physical stores has at times echoed "All About Eve," with "thumb shopping" playing the role of the ingénue poised to outshine those brick-and-mortar has-beens. But mobile shopping will actually have the opposite effect, according to Matt Moog, CEO of PowerReviews, which bills itself as a "Consumer Engagement Engine" that helps companies connect shoppers at the moment of purchase to drive sales.
Balancing Cost and Customer Expectations for Profitable Apparel Returns
Analyst Insight: Online retailers must make the returns process convenient for their customers which, in turn, increases the amount of product returned. But every company must find a balance between cost and customer expectations. Should you encourage customers to return products to the store? To the DC? To a 3PL? The answer depends on your brand, culture, infrastructure and average unit price. – Bruce Baring and Jason Denmon, Apparel Industry Leaders, Fortna Inc.
Improved Invoice Processing and Increased Vendor Count
Challenge: In an effort to better communicate with external partners and suppliers, a national gas and convenience store chain was looking to improve order management, invoicing and overall visibility into the supply chain.
Reduced Time-Consuming Processes and Accelerated Trading Partner Onboarding
Challenge: A retailer and transporter of food goods was faced with a time-consuming integration cycle that was eating into the company’s bottom line. Their resource-constrained IT department was looking for an automated solution to simplify and accelerate its trading partner integration as well as efficiently manage complex data capture and transfer.
