Improved Tools for Monitoring Specimens May Make RFID a Standard in Healthcare
The quality of any healthcare laboratory - whether it's servicing the biomedical, clinical trial and research, diagnostic or pharmaceutical community - depends on its ability to provide accurate, precise and timely results. In recent years, some labs say they have begun using RFID to automate manual processes to track human specimens and other samples, preventing loss and misidentification, assuring chain of custody, enabling quick retrieval when needed and facilitating compliance with government regulations.
U.N. Shipping Sector Wants Climate Commitments by 2018
At the United Nations climate change conference (COP22) in Morocco, the International Chamber of Shipping's director of policy said that industry wants to see climate change commitments made at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) by 2018, with an enforcement mechanism to follow after.
In China-U.S. Trade War, Trump May Have Weapons
As a candidate, Donald Trump aimed some of his most blistering words at China, declaring that "we already have a trade war" and suggesting ominously that "we have the power over China, economic power." As president of the United States, Trump can use trade - a cornerstone of his populist rise - as a weapon, with the potential to drastically reshape the world's two largest economies, as well as the companies, industries and workers who depend on their hundreds of billions of dollars in closely linked goods. But neither side may win.
Manufacturers Slow Investment Amid Uncertainty
Spending by manufacturers on plant and machinery is expected to slow over the coming two years, according to research. Manufacturers' organisation EEF said "elevated levels of uncertainty are clouding the ability of businesses to forecast future demand," though this was an underlying trend not altered by June's Brexit vote.
Shift to Automation May Prevent Trump From Delivering on His Jobs Promise
Trump's victory was enabled by technology - everything from his use of social media to Clinton's email scandals to Russian hacking. But advancements in technology and how they reshape our economy may also keep him from delivering on some of the major promises that made him so popular during the campaign season.
Report: New Low in Sea Trade Growth
Seaborne shipments passed 10 billion tons for the first time ever in 2015, up 2.1 percent from 9.8 billion tons the year before - the slowest pace of growth in the industry since 2009, according to the UNCTAD Review of Maritime Transport 2016. The report says future growth looks uncertain.
Forecast Says 1.4m New Industrial Robots by 2019
The EU is frontrunner in the world's robotic race, but by 2019 China will have taken over, according to the latest forecast from the International Federation of Robots. More than 1.4 million new industrial robots will be installed in factories around the world by 2019.
Carrier Transicold Says New Tool Locates Source of Temperature Abnormalities
For refrigerated haulers who require independent verification of temperatures inside trucks and trailers or immediate documentation for receivers, Carrier Transicold is offering its DataLink 2 recorder. The system, for single-temperature or multi-temperature applications, uses up to three independent temperature sensors, providing an added layer of verification beyond the refrigeration system's built-in recording ability, the refrigeration equipment company says.
North American Intermodal Volumes Decline Again, Report Says
Total intermodal traffic recorded another volume decline in the third quarter of 2016, according to the Intermodal Association of North America's latest quarterly Intermodal Market Trends and Statistics report. Contributing to this loss were intermodal trailer volumes which dropped 26.9 percent and international shipments which fell 6.7 percent. The domestic container business experienced gains of 3.3 percent which kept the overall volume loss to 4.6 percent.

The members of the new Ocean Alliance, CMA CGM, COSCO Container Lines, Evergreen Line and Orient Overseas Container Line, have announced their proposed "day one" trading network. The Alliance is the largest shipping alliance in the world, and the partners will operate 40 services on the East-West trades with around 100 ports of call and almost 500 port pairs.
To Solve IoT Security, Look to Cloud Software, ARM Says
The recent DDoS attacks launched from IoT devices demonstrate that the internet of things spans all parts of IT and that most companies deploying it still need a lot of help. That's the message from ARM, the chip design company behind nearly every smartphone and a big chunk of IoT, at its annual TechCon event last week in Silicon Valley.
