Supply Chain Shows to Attend This Year
It is not too early to start planning the supply chain shows you will be attending in 2017. Here is a list of some key supply chain events this year.
Food Companies' Environmental Efforts Are Increasing Production and Profits
The food and agriculture industry depend on natural resources, along with predictable weather and climate patterns, to produce their products and turn a profit. And yet these two industries have historically been divided over climate change and often slow to embrace new technologies and practices that can help reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and environmental footprint.
Sourcing a Safer Battery (That Won't Catch Fire)
Mike Zimmerman likes to shock his guests by using a hammer to drive a nail through a solid polymer lithium metal battery. Nothing happens - and that's a good thing.
After Years Offshore, Bike Production Rolls Back to the U.S.
From hand-crafted boutique brands to high-volume manufacturing and assembly, dedicated U.S. bicycle makers are reshoring bike production to the U.S. A confluence of factors including rising offshore costs, the benefits of a "local for local" business strategy, the growing popularity of bikes in expanding urban areas and patriotism are giving rise to new opportunities for an "old" mode of transportation.
Retailer Asos Boosts U.K. Sourcing After Pound's Brexit Fall
Asos Plc, Britain's largest online-only fashion retailer, plans to double its U.K. manufacturing as the pound's post-Brexit plunge makes domestic production more affordable.
TouchPath Extends WMS System With 'Power-Picking' Control Center
Supply chain solutions provider TouchPath is extending its TouchWMS warehouse management system with the addition of a "power picking" control center, the technology company has announced. The first TouchWMS Control Centre user - an unnamed international components manufacturer - reports early pick productivity increases of up to 50 percent as a result, according to TouchPath.
Scout RFP Introduces 'Opportunity-Based' E-Sourcing
Scout RFP, a cloud-based strategic sourcing provider, has launched two new sourcing tools: Pipeline and Intake. Scout Intake, a project request sourcing tool, allows sourcing to efficiently fulfill submitted requests and quickly respond to business needs. Scout Pipeline, project resource tool, allows businesses to gain real-time visibility into sourcing opportunities and directly tie activity to business impact through a collaborative interface, the company says.
Beyond Skills, Precision Manufacturing Needs Passion
The "skills gap" is a problem that manufacturers have been working to address for much of the past decade: new accreditation programs, expanding training curricula and updated certification standards have had some positive effects in filling the gap. But those approaches are based on addressing manufacturers' needs, emphasizing employment opportunities and other practical advantages. Addressing the issue from the employees' point of view may require more "passion."
HP Partner Jabil Moves One Step Closer to a 3-D Future
John Dulchinos and the rest of his team at Jabil Circuit received their new Multi Jet Fusion 3-D printer from Hewlett-Packard back in June and, for months, they have fiddled with the technology. Process development. Characterization capabilities. Figuring out the limits of what, exactly, is possible, when you print as quick as 340 million voxels per second.
A Custom Shirt Is No Longer So Hard to Find
Seph Skerritt bought his first custom shirt in Shanghai, during an internship after college. It got him thinking why the same service wasn't available to a wider audience. "I told them exactly what I wanted, and that's what I got," he said.
Two-Thirds of Firms Have Supply Chain Visibility
Supply chain disruptions have cost one in three organizations more than €1m ($1.06m) in the last year, according to a report. "The Supply Chain Resilience Report," published by the Business Continuity Institute and supported by Zurich Insurance Group, said the overall number of organizations experiencing supply chain disruptions fell from 74 to 70 percent.
