How East Coast Ports Are Getting 'Big-Ship Ready'
It takes a big port to handle a big ship. Can East Coast ports meet the challenge of handling the new generation of mega-container vessels?
Boeing Sees E-Commerce, Express Services Driving Air Cargo Traffic
Boeing Commercial Airplanes has issued a 20-year outlook for global air-cargo traffic, calling for a consolidated annual growth rate of 4.2 percent in volume (evaluated in metric tonnage), and saying this increase will result in significant demand for new and converted cargo jets needed to meet market demand by 2035.
Shell Says Demand for Oil Could Peak in 5 Years
Royal Dutch Shell Plc, the world's second-biggest oil company by market value, thinks demand for oil could peak in as little as five years. Demand will peak before supply, says chief financial officer Simon Henry, and that peak will be driven by efficiency and substitution, more than offsetting the new demand for transport.
Pollution Accord Is Set for Global Flights, But Tasks Remain
The great and the good of world aviation gathered in Montreal last month to do something that seemed impossible even a couple of years ago. They agreed to cap greenhouse gas emissions from international flights. The pact - the first climate change agreement to apply worldwide to a specific sector, one that produces the equivalent annual carbon dioxide output as that of Germany - was greeted with almost universal support.
Ocean Alliance Announces Expanded Trading Network
The members of the new Ocean Alliance, CMA CGM, COSCO Container Lines, Evergreen Line and Orient Overseas Container Line, have announced their proposed "day one" trading network. The Alliance is the largest shipping alliance in the world, and the partners will operate 40 services on the East-West trades with around 100 ports of call and almost 500 port pairs.
Parcel Traffic Ambitions Overcome European Borders, Logistics Experts Report
Britain's vote for the "Brexit" may have dealt a blow to the European Union, but the vision of an integrated European parcel network is very much alive, logistics experts say, thanks to the Deutsche Post DHL Group (DP-DHL). The German postal, express and logistics giant is acquiring a strong presence in the British market with the takeover of UK Mail, the second-largest mail provider in the United Kingdom.
XYpper Launches 'Uber-Like' Technology for Trucking Industry
Transportation software company XYpper, Inc. has launched an app- and web-based system that works similarly to Uber and other "sharing economy" apps - by directly connecting individuals who have a need with someone who can perform a service. In XYpper's case, the app connects freight brokers who have loads that need to be delivered with truckers who are either in their geographical area or on their way.
DHL Expands Operations in Southern California
DHL has expanded its footprint in Southern California to accommodate a growing demand for its global shipping services, the logistics company announced. The new 66,730-square-foot service center in Santa Ana adds more than 27,000 square feet to the company's previous facility in Irvine, and reflects an increase in shipment volumes that DHL is handling.
Major Carriers Forecast Significant Growth in Holiday Shipping Volume
UPS, FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service are all projecting major growth in holiday shipping volume during the peak season, driven by the continued boom in ecommerce activity. UPS, for example, is projecting 700 million deliveries between Thanksgiving and the end of the year, a 14 percent increase over 2015.
CaroTrans Adds Direct Atlanta-Gothenburg Link
CaroTrans, a global non-vessel operating common carrier (NVOCC) and ocean freight consolidator, has announced a new Northern Europe service connection with the addition of a direct Atlanta-Gothenburg LCL service. The service has a 21-day transit time, and a Gothenburg-to-Atlanta service will soon follow.
