Longshoreman Pay Dwarfs That of Most Employees in Transportation Industry
More than 4,400 ships bring nearly $400bn worth of goods through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach every year, a crucial link in the global supply chain of factories, warehouses, docks, highways and rail lines. Most blue-collar workers along the chain have seen their wages slashed with the quick rise of global trade. But the longshoremen who move the goods the shortest distance, between ship and shore, have shrewdly protected pay that trumps that of many white-collar managers.
4PLs Make the Final Move
Analyst Insight: Fourth-party logistics providers (4PLs) are gaining traction in the final delivery service provider industry. The explosion of order-direct to customer delivery has created a need for final delivery service providers with varying capacities and capabilities. 4PLs can provide a network of regional final delivery companies. The creation of strong 4PL players has captured the trust of manufacturers and retailers. – Lisa Kennedy, Project Manager, Tompkins International
What's Your Strategy for Speed in Distribution?
Analyst Insight: Speed is a game-changer. Leaders are enabling faster fulfillment and reaping real bottom line and competitive advantage benefits. The key is balancing potential revenue gain or service level improvement against the investment and operating costs required to deliver on the promise. Choosing the right strategy depends on understanding the impacts, not just within the distribution center, but across the entire organization. – Helgi Thor Leja, Industrial Distribution Leader, Fortna Inc.
Container Shipping Today: Mega-Ships and Mega-Problems
If we're to believe the big container lines, ever-larger ships are the remedy for their financial woes. Why, then, are so many of them still losing money?

Top Retail Megatrends Require an Omnichannel Supply Chain
Analyst Insight: The retail industry is undergoing massive transformations as a result of three megatrends: technology, globalization and supply chain. New technologies have changed the definition of the word "shopping." Globalization has resulted in products designed for international consumption and manufactured in the country with lowest total delivered cost. Supply chain's role is to support the desires of global customers with an efficient flow of goods, information and cash. The omnichannel supply chain is critical to these transformations, and it should evolve through a Strategy-Structure-Implementation process. – Jim Tompkins, CEO, Tompkins International
Hard Lessons in Disruption: What the West Coast Port Slowdown Really Taught Us
With a tentative agreement in place between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), the 7-month-long West Coast port crisis has come to an end. What comes next is the final body count - what percentage of GDP shrank because of the slowdown? What was the impact on the trade deficit? Who got hit hardest, and just how hard? Then what? There may be a collective sigh of relief in the air, but can things really go back to normal? Should they?

Auto Suppliers in Financial Squeeze as Automakers Demand Deep Cost Cuts, Local Production
Automotive suppliers are under mounting pressure to satisfy two conflicting customer demands: to cut costs and to open more factories in fast-growing emerging markets so that they can be closer to their customers' production plants. Striking the right balance between cost and proximity in global manufacturing networks will be one of the industry's greatest challenges, according to a report by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), conducted in partnership with the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA. The report is titled The Proximity Paradox: Balancing Auto Suppliers' Manufacturing Networks.
Next-Generation Rail Fleet Management
Analyst Insight: The shale gas revolution has fueled a resurgence of domestic manufacturing, driving rail shipments up over 6 percent and a two-year backlog for new cars. Maximizing fleet utilization is now a key management issue for most shippers. While current rail management tools are effective at tracking rail cars, an important gap exists with accurately predicting the usage and location of the cars over the entire planning horizon. – Alfred Sherk, CEO, SherTrack LLC
How To Manage DC Talent
Analyst Insight: Keeping talent has risen to be a concern for managers, directors and CEOs across the country. It's even caught the attention of academics. What policies employed at the DC level gets the most out of the money spent on training, and gets the best results? Our 2014 study starts to answer that question. – Karl B. Manrodt, Professor of Logistics, and Donnie Williams, Assistant Professor of Logistics, Georgia College and State University
Global Food Manufacturer Achieves Significant Supply Chain and Duty Savings
Challenge: This global food manufacturer and distributor is one of the world's largest companies, exporting to over 70 countries. With an eye toward sustainable growth, the company realized their global trade process needed a transformation – manually intensive processes would often lead to inaccurate duty payments, documentation errors, and shipment delays.
