Spot Market Freight Volume Remains High in May
Spot market freight availability as measured by the DAT North American Freight Index has run high since July 2013 due to factors including extraordinary weather events, regulatory changes and driver shortages. May 2014 extends the trend, becoming the eleventh consecutive month to post a year-over-year record high, a 40 percent increase over last May. Month over month, however, May freight volumes declined 2.1 percent compared to April.
US Foods Plan DC to Serve New England Customers
US Foods plans to open a distribution center in Seabrook, N.H. to better serve its customers throughout New England. The company currently services this customer base from its facility in Peabody, Mass., which has approximately 188,000 square feet. The new facility will offer more than 500,000 square feet of space, including additional dry and cold storage and fleet fueling and maintenance areas.
FPS Group Launches Temperature-Controlled LCL Service to Dubai, Japan
The Rotterdam, Netherlands and Prague, Czech Republic-based members of the Famous Pacific Shipping Group network of independent freight forwarders and consolidators have launched a trade-only, temperature-controlled ocean less-than-containerload service for perishable commodities.
