Opposition Leads to Shelving Measure on Accurate Weighing of Ocean Containers
Two countries providing flags of convenience to merchant vessels, Panama and Cyprus, threw up roadblocks to the safe carriage of containerized cargo recently. With more than 80 percent of world cargo being moved on container ships and those ships getting ever larger, any measure that can make these shipments safer must be considered. Sadly, these countries find that some proposed measures are inconvenient.
Airfreight Industry Woes Persist in Asia-Pacific
Freight volumes in the Asia-Pacific region fell 4.4 percent, year-over-year, in August, a drop in line with the 4.1-percent, year-over-year, decrease in cargo capacity the area recorded last month. Such losses aren't exclusive to August, however; last month marked the sixth consecutive month of cargo declines in the Asia-Pacific, according to Association of Asia Pacific Airlines statistics.
In August, Pricing Up in All Categories for Used commercial Trucks
Pricing continues to be the most interesting and watched of the used truck market metrics. In August, pricing was up for all three time period comparisons - month over month, year over year, and year to date/year to date. Volumes also increased month over month, but remained well below pace for other time period comparisons.
RFID Helps Track Baskets of Small But Extremely Costly Parts
For businesses that manufacture aerospace, pharmaceutical or other high-value items, even a single component built into a product can be worth tens of thousands of dollars. Losing track of a basket filled with parts can thus be extremely costly, due not only to each component's cost but the potential loss of production time if assembly is delayed. The solution may be RFID technology, according to Marlin Steel Wire Products, a producer of custom wire baskets and other metal products.
Trailer Orders Improve in August, But Are Still Lackluster
Net orders for trailers improved in August, rising to 15,370 units. Applying August's seasonal factor brought the order total to 18,200 units.

U.S. Airfreight Industry Stagnating, Study Suggests
The U.S. airfreight market generated revenues of $28bn in 2011, a 7.4 percent, year-over-year, increase. Although a seemingly positive development, this figure is on par with the revenues the industry recorded in the 2000-2001 financial year. Such statistics show that the U.S. - despite the domination of integrators FedEx and UPS - isn't immune to the sluggishness affecting the global airfreight market, a new study conducted by Air Cargo Management Group asserted.
Cost of Ground Transportation in Canada Dipped in July
