Traffic Jam at the Nation's Crossroads
The city's most famous poet, Carl Sandburg, called Chicago the "nation's freight handler." That title stands true today.
Why Are Traditional Retailers Failing?
UPS Talks About New Saturday Ground Pickup, Delivery
UPS recently announced it was adding Saturday pickup and delivery for its ground division, initially in 15 markets and expanding to 4,700 U.S. cities and towns by the busy holiday season, and to 5,800 locations next year.
Hiring Pace Picks Up in Trucking Sector
Trucking fleets stepped up hiring at the fastest pace in five years in February, adding 10,600 jobs in a display of confidence as companies across U.S. industries ramped up payrolls.
Transforming Logistics: Don't Fall Behind on These Trends
Analyst Insight: The findings from the 25th Annual Trends and Issues in Transportation and Logistics suggest that three complex supply chain elements - transportation, technology, and organizational structure - have companies waiting before committing to transformation changes in these areas. However, waiting too long to make a decision will result in a competitive disadvantage that will be difficult to overcome in a global economy. Understanding the interplay and interconnectedness of the three elements is essential in determining the path forward. – Mary Collins Holcomb, SCM professor, University of Tennessee, and Karl Manrodt, logistics and SCM professor, Georgia College and State University
Omni-Mode Transportation Integration Is Key Tool for Profitable Fulfillment
Analyst Insight: In 2016, Amazon subsidized the cost of shipping to their customers by about $7bn, setting a very high bar for customer expectations of cheap or free shipping with rapid delivery. Most competitors don't have the same options as Amazon to buy market share this way, putting enormous pressure on them to squeeze every penny out of fulfillment and transportation costs (as well as to differentiate in other dimensions). Omni-mode integration is one tool that can help companies lower shipping costs to effectively compete. – Bill McBeath, chief research officer, ChainLink Research
Who's to Blame for the Trucker Shortage?
Help wanted: America needs truck drivers. In 2015, American Trucking Associations estimated that for-hire trucking companies had nearly 50,000 fewer drivers than they needed. The shortage was less severe in 2016, but the trade group expects it to worsen in coming years.
New Platooning System Generates 10 Percent Fuel Savings
In the not so distance future truck drivers will find themselves in close quarters with colleagues. This new pattern of driving, "platooning", calls for a number of trucks to follow each other very closely so they can take advantage of the aerodynamics and save fuel.
A Maker of Minibikes and Go-Karts Roars Into the U.S. With Domestic Production
Monster Moto, a producer of economically priced off-road vehicles, shifts from offshore production to domestic assembly, a move made possible by cutting its transportation and logistics expense.
DHL, Huawei Enter Supply Chain Automation Partnership
Deutsche Post DHL Group and Chinese technology conglomerate Huawei Technologies are collaborating on a range of supply chain services for customers using "industrial-grade internet-of-things hardware and infrastructure."
How Self-Driving Trucks, Intelligent Highways Are Changing Transportation Logistics
No matter what products they make, how many they make, or how often they make them, all U.S. manufacturers share a common goal: They need to get their products to their customers, on time, and the familiar litany of trucks-trains-boats-and-planes (and sometimes, pipelines) remains the way that goods get moved. At least that's the case in early 2017. Within a year or two, maybe not so much.
For Trucking Regulation, It's a Foggy Road Ahead
GPS technology can tell a commercial trucker all about routes and traffic conditions. But when it comes to predicting the regulatory landscape, the road ahead is a lot less clear.
