It has meant layoffs for thousands of mariners, but it's also having an impact on officers in a different way: a shortage of sea time.
Uber's Self-Driving Truck Makes First Commercial Delivery
The futurists of Silicon Valley may not have seen this one coming: The first commercial delivery made by a self-driving truck was 2,000 cases of Budweiser beer. Last week, Otto, the Uber-owned self-driving vehicle operation, announced the completion of its first commercial delivery, having delivered its beer load from Fort Collins, Colo., to Colorado Springs, a roughly 120-mile trip on Interstate 25.
Evergreen Line Enhances Asia-Australia Network
In hopes of offering shippers a more comprehensive service on Asia-Australia trade, Evergreen Line has announced a new joint North East Asia-Australia Express (NEAX) service. The Taiwanese container transportation and shipping company is teaming up with Orient Overseas Container Line, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, "K" Line and YangMing Marine Transport Corp.

Hanjin Shipping's European routes services have completely halted, the company said last week, and a Seoul court overseeing its receivership process has approved winding down four of its European units.
Walmart and JD.com Are Launching Three E-commerce Initiatives in China
Three months after entering into a partnership to expand online shopping options for Chinese consumers, Walmart and JD.com have announced three new ways for customers to access Walmart products from around the world. The efforts, which are part of the original strategy announced in June, are officially launching during the run up to Singles Day on November 11. They aim to improve logistics and supply chain functions, cross-border e-commerce and online-to-offline e-commerce services for consumers across the country, the companies say.
Total Truck Volumes Will Grow Despite Pipelines Gaining Market Share, Trucking Group Says
Growth in both overall freight volumes and in the amount of goods moved by truck is expected to continue far into the future, according to the American Trucking Associations. Between 2016 and 2027, overall freight tonnage will grow a total of 35 percent, according to the group. Over that same timeframe, the amount of freight moved by trucks will grow slightly less at 27 percent.
Amazon Limiting Fulfillment Networks to Existing Merchants Ahead of Holiday Season
In an attempt to deal with potential network capacity issues this holiday season, Amazon is limiting the use of Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) warehouses and services to existing sellers between now and Dec. 19, the company confirmed. This means new sellers would have difficulty using FBA to fulfill last-minute Christmas orders.
Russia Adds Deepwater Port to 15-Year Transport Strategy
A new deepwater port is planned for Arkhangelsk in the north of European Russia, according to Northern Shipping Company Arkhangelsk, a Russian shipping company. The new deepwater hub will be suitable for year-round handling of large capacity vessels and will be situated 55 kilometers (34 miles) north from Arkhangelsk near Mudyug Island, in the northern part of the Sukhoye Morje Bay, says NSC Arkhangelsk.
FedEx to Invest €1.4Bn in Paris Airport Facility Overhaul
FedEx Express is expanding its distribution hub at Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport with a €200m ($217.38m) investment in technology and automation, and a €1.2bn ($1.3bn), 30-year lease. The 30-year lease underscores the long-term importance of the European Union to the company's long-term plans. Once completed, FedEx said the upgrade will increase sorting capacity by 40 percent.
IAG Cargo Announces First Route From London to Louisiana
IAG Cargo has announced its new route to New Orleans, Louisiana. Beginning March 26, 2017, the airline says it will become the only carrier to fly direct from its London Heathrow (LHR) hub to New Orleans International Airport (MSY).
Hyperloop Pioneer TU Delft Teams With DHL for California Competition
Amsterdam to Paris in 30 minutes. That's the goal of the "Delft Hyperloop" - a pod-like capsule developed by TU Delft for the rapid transportation of people and goods through tubes - the maker says. The apparatus that might make such a trip possible arrived in California aboard a DHL freighter last week to compete in the "Hyperloop Pod Competition."

According to Tesla's Elon Musk, driverless car technology is a problem that's pretty much solved. As he's made clear numerous times, the regulators need to catch up. They might want to start moving faster, he says, because Tesla isn't slowing down.
