More than a third of semiconductor companies say that they are planning to expand their business into additional Asia-Pacific (APAC) markets over the next three years.
In a FedEx survey of 478 semiconductor industry stakeholders conducted at Taiwan's SEMICON trade show, nearly four in five respondents identified Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Greater China and Japan as the markets where they expect to see the largest increase in semiconductor demand. Another 25% said that they plan to increase or diversify sourcing within APAC or globally.
A separate report published by FedEx titled, "From AI to EVs: How APAC Semiconductors Drive the Global Innovation Map," highlights AI and high-performance computing as the fastest growing drivers of semiconductor demand globally. That will be helped along by the more than 2,000 data centers that are expected to be built between 2026 and 2035.
The APAC region will play a substantial role in that future, FedEx asserts, with China acting as a leading material supplier and consumer market. Taiwan also leads global advanced semiconductor manufacturing and accounts for 60% of worldwide foundry output, while South Korea is a global leader in memory chip production, Japan plays an important role in semiconductor equipment production, and Southeast Asia has emerged as a center for semiconductor assembly and packaging.
This all amounts to a deeply connected semiconductor ecosystem that spans APAC, as a single region uniquely equipped to design, fabricate, package, test and develop semiconductors.
