We're Afraid of Getting Hacked, But We're Not Doing Much About It, Poll Says
A hack at Sony Pictures that exposed more than 170,000 emails in 2014 derailed a much-hyped film's release and prompted a months-long industry freakout. A hacking incident at Yahoo now threatens to derail a sale to Verizon. WikiLeaks' releases of Democratic officials' hacked private emails are providing near-endless fodder for Donald Trump's presidential campaign. And yet, while large numbers of Americans appreciate the threat of getting hacked, they don't seem to be changing their behaviors in any appreciable way.

Startup Sewbo has announced that it used a robot to sew a T-shirt, producing the world's first robotically-sewn garment, which could mark a significant change for the global garment industry.
Data Sharing Between Commuters and City Government May Be Growing Trend
Digital mapping company Esri has announced a partnership with crowdsourcing traffic app maker Waze to help city governments and drivers communicate more efficiently about traffic conditions, including construction delays and accidents. By using Esri ArcGIS (geographic information system) software to connect to a new Waze connected citizens program, cities can share data about the conditions of their roads with drivers, while drivers can anonymously report accidents, potholes and other road condition information.
Macy's Announces RFID Tagging for 100 Percent of Items
Macy's plans to have all items in every store tagged by the end of 2017, according to Bill Connell, senior VP of logistics and operations. To achieve this goal, the retailer is asking all of its product vendors to supply merchandise already fitted with passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID tags based on the Electronic Product Code Gen 2 standard.
Investments in Analytics Technology Save Time, Money on Financial Planning, Survey Says
It might not come as much of a surprise to learn that the more companies spend on analytics technology, the better the performance of their financial planning and analysis functions. What might be less intuitive is just how extreme the advantage is when using more FP&A-oriented technology, according to a survey by the Association for Finance Professionals.
A.I. Will Soon Be a Top Business Investment Priority, Analysts Say
Mention artificial intelligence, and a discussion about the robot wipeout of humankind is sure to follow. It's also a technology that businesses will increasingly trust in decision-making, Gartner analysts said this week at the research firm's annual Symposium and ITxpo.
Fill-Air Flow Wants to Bring Inflatable Plastic to Small Businesses, Designer Says
Forget packing peanuts, it's all about the air cushion, says John Wolf, vice president for global sector marketing at Sealed Air and the inventor of bubble wrap. Fill-Air Flow is a device the size of a paper-towel dispenser that creates clear plastic air cushions - a cheaper, sleeker alternative to packing peanuts and the like - at a scale designed to be affordable for small businesses, Wolf says.
Drone Company Launches Healthcare Delivery Service in Rwanda
A drone service delivering blood for transfusions has been launched by the president of Rwanda. The drones are expected to make between 50 and 150 life-saving deliveries a day to remote and inaccessible clinics across the western half of the country, according to Zipline, the company behind the technology.
3D Printing Could Threaten Global Companies, Study Says
Thanks to dramatic reductions in price and rapid advances in open-source development, 3D printers have gained ground at both mainstream manufacturing plants and boutique design shops. Even models priced below $1,000 can print ever faster, bigger, and at a higher quality, meaning that households may soon choose to invest in a printer and make, rather than buy, more of the products they use, researchers say.
IoT Devices Becoming More Common Hosts for Hijacked Data, Researchers Say
The vision of the so-called internet of things - giving all sorts of physical things a digital makeover - has been years ahead of reality. But that gap is closing fast, according to Gartner, a research firm. Today, the range of things being computerized and connected to networks is stunning, from watches, appliances and clothing to cars, jet engines and factory equipment. Even roadways and farm fields are being upgraded with digital sensors. In the last two years, the number of internet-of-things devices in the world has surged nearly 70 percent to 6.4 billion, Gartner says. By 2020, the firm forecasts, the internet-of-things population will reach 20.8 billion.
