Mega Alliances, Declining Unit Costs Will Spark Recovery in Ocean Container Business in 2016-2017, Report Says
The recovery of the ocean container industry – possibly by late 2016 or 2017 – is to be based around the formation of the new mega alliances and the continued reduction of unit costs, rather than the matching of supply and demand at the individual trade route level, according to Drewry's Container Annual Review & Forecast 2014/15. A different recovery is taking shape, which is unlikely to be built on any improvement in freight rates.
August's Figures Show Airfreight Volumes Maintain Steady Growth Course
Global airfreight volumes continued with robust growth in August, according to the International Air Transport Association. Measured by freight tonne kilometers (FTKs), volumes rose 5.1 percent compared to August 2013. Capacity grew at a slower pace of 3.4 percent from the previous year. This is the second strong month for cargo volumes in a row, following the 6.1 percent year-on-year rise recorded in July.
Air Cargo Predicted to Grow 4.7 Percent Annually Over Next 20 Years
After two years of either flat or slightly negative traffic growth, demand for air cargo transport began to grow slowly and steadily during the second quarter of 2013. The uptick in traffic continued into the second half of 2013 to end the year 0.9 percent above the 2012 traffic total. Growth has continued to gather strength in 2014, nearly recovering the long-term trend rate. World air cargo traffic is forecast to grow an average 4.7 percent per year over the next 20 years to reach a total of more than twice the number of revenue tonne-kilometers (RTK) logged in 2013. The number of airplanes in the freighter fleet will increase by more than half by the end of the forecast period.

Procurement Teams Increase Value, Outperform Peers by Going 'Borderless'
Despite ongoing economic and business environment challenges, world-class procurement organizations continue to outperform the peer group by a wide margin, up to $6m in cost savings for the typical large company. They deliver services at 19 percent lower cost with greater effectiveness and require 27 percent fewer full-time-equivalents (FTEs) per $1bn in spend. For many, efficiency gains have reached their practical limits. What's next?
What Supply Chain Managers Should Know About Channel Data Management
Gaining deep visibility into sales channels and a timely understanding of every detail about product shipments is essential to modern businesses. Granular knowledge – about what items were sold, who sold them, who bought them, where they are now, and whether they’re being returned – gives manufacturers an edge in optimizing the final mile of the supply chain. That information is known as channel data, and the tools used to gather and manage that data are known as channel data management systems, or CDM.
