Forecasting & Demand Planning: Page 134
Next Generation Moves Beyond Demand/Supply Balancing
Analyst Insight: It's been another year of exciting times within supply chain management, especially with regard to S&OP - as we continue to improve upon a 35-year-old process of balancing demand and supply. Approximately 85 percent of supply chain management professionals around the globe say they are exercising the S&OP process (informal polling of approximately1,000 execs over the past year). About 65 percent of those professionals are positioned in Stage I or II of AMR's (now Gartner) S&OP Maturity Model. While this is positive news, it's clear that globalization of our supply chains requires more than just S&OP basics. - Gregory L. Schlegel, adjunct professor, supply chain risk management, Lehigh University Graduate Program
Social, Mobile and Traditional Collaboration Applications Converge on the Platform
Analyst Insight: In the past, collaboration technology has been a separate software segment encompassing web conferencing and document sharing. But technology providers are now blending these solutions with business applications such as logistics, forecasting and product design, creating a more natural user experience. After all, collaboration is about the business and the people. Collaboration is also a catalyst for other technology sectors such as cloud, mobile and network infrastructure. - Ann Grackin, CEO, ChainLink Research

Sales & Operations Planning... Business Management in Near Real Time?
Analyst Insight: The sales and operations planning process has evolved from manufacturing conflict resolution in the late 1980s to data- and visibility-enhanced strategic demand and supply balancing for retail executives today. This is a remarkable evolution for a concept. As visibility continues to increase, could S&OP become the primary tool for managing supply chains or, for some, complete businesses? - Ralph Cox, principal, Tompkins International
Volatility: An Enemy of Consumer Product Companies and Their Supply Chains
Analyst Insight: Volatility is a huge factor for business today. From the stock market to local economies, these volatile times impact world events and play havoc on supply chains. Companies that do not learn to manage the volatility of their supply chains will continue to be at the mercy of external influences. - Bruce Tompkins, executive director, Tompkins Supply Chain Consortium
