Russia Adds Deepwater Port to 15-Year Transport Strategy
A new deepwater port is planned for Arkhangelsk in the north of European Russia, according to Northern Shipping Company Arkhangelsk, a Russian shipping company. The new deepwater hub will be suitable for year-round handling of large capacity vessels and will be situated 55 kilometers (34 miles) north from Arkhangelsk near Mudyug Island, in the northern part of the Sukhoye Morje Bay, says NSC Arkhangelsk.
FedEx to Invest €1.4Bn in Paris Airport Facility Overhaul
FedEx Express is expanding its distribution hub at Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport with a €200m ($217.38m) investment in technology and automation, and a €1.2bn ($1.3bn), 30-year lease. The 30-year lease underscores the long-term importance of the European Union to the company's long-term plans. Once completed, FedEx said the upgrade will increase sorting capacity by 40 percent.
IAG Cargo Announces First Route From London to Louisiana
IAG Cargo has announced its new route to New Orleans, Louisiana. Beginning March 26, 2017, the airline says it will become the only carrier to fly direct from its London Heathrow (LHR) hub to New Orleans International Airport (MSY).
Hyperloop Pioneer TU Delft Teams With DHL for California Competition
Amsterdam to Paris in 30 minutes. That's the goal of the "Delft Hyperloop" - a pod-like capsule developed by TU Delft for the rapid transportation of people and goods through tubes - the maker says. The apparatus that might make such a trip possible arrived in California aboard a DHL freighter last week to compete in the "Hyperloop Pod Competition."
Gearbulk and Grieg Star Combine Their Fleets
Gearbulk and Grieg Star have announced that they will be combining their efforts to form a single dry bulk shipping company. They say the joint venture will operate the parties' combined fleet of open hatch, semi open hatch and conventional bulk vessels.
U.K., China Clear Unlimited Cargo Flights
An agreement this month to remove limits on the number of cargo flights between the United Kingdom and China is an encouraging signal that post-Brexit policy makers are serious about exploring, or expanding, trade routes outside of the Euro zone, said the U.K.'s Transport Minister Chris Grayling. In addition to unlimited cargo flights, the number of permitted passenger flights under the agreement will be raised from 40 to 100 per week.
Data Sharing Between Commuters and City Government May Be Growing Trend
Digital mapping company Esri has announced a partnership with crowdsourcing traffic app maker Waze to help city governments and drivers communicate more efficiently about traffic conditions, including construction delays and accidents. By using Esri ArcGIS (geographic information system) software to connect to a new Waze connected citizens program, cities can share data about the conditions of their roads with drivers, while drivers can anonymously report accidents, potholes and other road condition information.
New Grocery Route Optimization Fulfills in 24 Hours, Lancaster Organics Reports
Lancaster Farm Fresh Organics (LFFO) has streamlined its previously manual fleet operations to help get product in and out of the warehouse and into the customer's hand in 24 hours or less, said Ben Kreider, the retailer's transportation director. LFFO uses the Descartes Route Planner.
Nordstrom, Costco, UPS Join Last-Mile Delivery Study in Seattle
In the heart of Amazon country, Nordstrom, Costco and UPS have joined with a team from the University of Washington in Seattle to study solutions to last-mile delivery issues in urban areas. UW's Urban Freight Lab will explore high-impact, low-cost solutions in urban areas where delivery vehicles, bicycles, cars and pedestrians all have to coexist, according to the university.
Drone Company Launches Healthcare Delivery Service in Rwanda
A drone service delivering blood for transfusions has been launched by the president of Rwanda. The drones are expected to make between 50 and 150 life-saving deliveries a day to remote and inaccessible clinics across the western half of the country, according to Zipline, the company behind the technology.
India's Major Ports See Container Boost, Analysis Shows
Container volumes at India's major ports increased by 6.32 percent over last year in the first half of this financial year through September, according to the Journal of Commerce. The 12 ports together handled 4.35 million TEUs in the first half, up from 4.09 million TEUs over the same time last year.
Miami International Announces Ocean-to-Air Shipment Program
Miami International Airport will soon receive perishable freight imports by sea and load it aboard international flights, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture - making it the first airport in Florida to handle ocean-to-air transshipment. The airport announced that the shipments should start by the end of 2016.
