The heat is on in garment supply chains. Why aren’t brands taking action?

A new report from the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights details extreme heat conditions in 10 garment factories in India. What it found has much larger implications, both for humanitarian concerns and global supply chains. On this episode, we speak with the report’s author, associate research scholar Lucy Siers, who explains its key findings, in particular a distressing gap between brand awareness and action. Fully 94% of brands say heat is a significant risk, but only 35% require suppliers to measure and report on temperature in their factories. And none collects data on a continuous basis. Why, then, do brands lack the necessarily visibility into the brutal conditions within their suppliers’ factories? What’s their level of responsibility for solving the problem? And what practical measures should be taken to alleviate conditions of extreme heat? (And why don’t they just install air conditioning?) Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
