Retailers Continue Cautious Stance on Merchandise Imports, Study Finds
Import volume at the nation's major retail container ports is expected to increase 1.1 percent in June over the same month last year, reflecting modest growth expectations as retailers head toward the back-to-school and holiday seasons, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

Targets Experiments with Four Different Fulfillment Models
Target CFO John Mulligan has confirmed that Target is in the middle of not one but four different fulfillment pilots, including acting as a guinea pig for the same-day-delivery trials of both Google and Ebay. The other Target trials involve pay-online-pickup-in-store, pay-in-store-pickup-at-another-store and pay-online-ship-from-store.
Who Cares About Conditions in Overseas Factories?
On March 25, 1911, fire swept through the Triangle Shirtwaist factory in New York City. One hundred and forty-six garment workers perished in the blaze, many of them trapped in the building because management had locked the exit doors. The youngest of the victims were 14. It was a horrifying tragedy, not atypical of working conditions during the so-called Progressive Era. Can we not, however, take comfort in knowing that those times are far behind us?
Largest Retailers Slow to Adapt to Needs of Omni-Channel Shopping Environment, Study Finds
Some of the largest U.S. and U.K. retailers are slow to adapt their store operations to changing consumer buying habits, according to a study by SD Retail Consulting, a retail advisory firm and unit of Hilco Trading, LLC. Surprisingly, the study found that 80 percent of retailers surveyed are not effectively training their in-store staff to accommodate the complex needs of the new multichannel shopper. The study surveyed Retail Operations Leaders from 35 leading retailers including Department Store, Specialty Retail, Big Box, Grocery and Convenience Store chains, mostly with revenues of over $1bn (50 percent of which are publicly traded).

Economic activity in the manufacturing sector contracted in May for the first time since November 2012, and the overall economy grew for the 48th consecutive month, say the nation's supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business.
Retailers Set to Spend Big on Omni-Channel Model, But ROI Is Uncertain
Retailers in the non-food sector, are set to invest some £5bn ($7.7bn) in making the transition to omni-channel over the next five years. A study by LCP Consulting, Retail Supply Chain Management: The Omni-channel Revolution, suggests that the "omni" revolution is accelerating with retailers, now spending on average the equivalent of three percent of annual turnover on the change.
Three Examples Why Cheaper Warehouse Equipment Isn't Always Less Expensive
Perhaps one of the most significant contributions the internet has made to our daily lives (outside of being able to connect with people we never spoke to and didn't even know in high school) is the ability to find the rock-bottom price for just about anything we need to purchase easily. With a quick search on the right keywords, or a visit to megasites such as Amazon.com or eBay, we can find exactly what we're looking for and save a lot of money to boot. Or so it would seem.

SEC's New Rule on Conflict Minerals: Clarity and Confusion
The fog is beginning to clear. High-tech and other types of manufacturers are getting a better idea of what they must do in order to conform to new requirements for disclosing the presence in their products of conflict minerals from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and neighboring states. Still, a number of questions remain unanswered.
