Online Retailing - and a Sneak Peek at ASOS
I'm a big fan of online shopping, with my personal favorites being Piperlime and ASOS. Let's face it - in an increasingly busy and hectic world, if you had the choice between buying something from the comfort of your own home, or pushing through throngs of crazed shoppers on a Saturday afternoon, for a lot of people the decision is an easy one. The National Retail Federation has urged the Federal Trade Commission to move cautiously in establishing regulations for mobile payments, and said any rules that are adopted should parallel those for the underlying form of payment and not be specific to the technology.
The Payoff of Customer Preference Planning
The days of planning based on history or store volume have gone the way of the buggy whip. It is no longer enough for buyers to arm themselves with a spreadsheet and a prayer. Omni-channel commerce requires companies to re-think their planning processes in order to profit. In this new retail environment, old paradigms have been shaken, replaced by much more complicated planning tools that answer the omni-channel commerce questions that can make or break a business.

Tire Maker Uses RFID Technology to Track Components, Reduce Wastage
The Continental Tire factory in Sarreguemines, France, has increased its production of tires from 33,000 tires per day to 38,000, thanks to a real-time location system it installed in September 2011 to track tire components. The RTLS has also helped the company reduce wastage of tire components, known as "semi products," by 20 percent.

Custom Modeling Identifies More Than One "Best Case" Scenario for Network Optimization
Challenge: A retailer with 4,400 independently owned and operated stores needed to optimize their distribution network, including 100 inbound source origins, 1.5 billion pounds per year shipped through 14 regional service and six consolidation centers, while maintaining 100 percent delivery within two days.
#1 Leading Chile Department Store Revolutionizes Supply Chain
Challenge: This retailer sought a collaborative supply chain execution platform that would create more cost-effective global logistics processes. The retailer used a single agent, based in Shanghai, who needed visibility into order and supplier milestones, in-transit shipments and trade document status.
Major Food Distributor Implements New WMS Using Bar Code Labels
Challenge: A major U.S. food manufacturer and distributor wanted to implement a new warehouse management system using bar code labels to track the movement of products within its warehouses and to customers. A difficult challenge for a 100,000 sq. ft. warehouse with 1,600 different products in inventory.
Warehouses Aren't Making Room for the Recovery
You could call inventory and warehouse space the twin evils of the supply chain. Both are big drags on the balance sheet. So it should come as no surprise that the two categories are lagging the recovery - or what's passing for one.
