Does McDonald's Need to Serve Up Better Supply Chain Transparency?
Recently, McDonald's, the world's iconic largest food service provider, has been (forgive the cliché) through the grinder. Poor performance has led to the departure of its CEO and plenty of critical attention in the business pages. Part of this story relates to the provenance, or origins, of its products: Chains that provide more upmarket "fast casual" dining such as Panera, Chipotle, and Shake Shack have brands that speak of freshness, health and trustworthy sourcing.
Why You Should be Planning For the 2015 Holiday Season Now
Even though 2014 is barely behind us, supply chains operate best 12 months out. If the 2015 holiday rush isn't top of mind, you're already behind.
How Long Will It Be Before the Entire Car Can Be 3D-Printed?
Efficient supply chains can be identified by a handful of components: proximity, flexibility and minimal waste. Now, the automotive industry is hoping to capture some of these same benefits through the use of 3D printing.
Boosting Profitability of High-Mix/Low-Volume Production
Historically, low-variation/high-volume production has been tweaked to gain optimal efficiencies and quality. Unfortunately for many manufacturers in the United States, manufacturing is now done in high-variation/low-volume environments.
Manufacturers Beef Up Efforts to Hire More Women
Companies such as Harley Davidson Motor Co. in Milwaukee, Illinois Tool Works Inc. in Glenview, Ill. and Essve Tech Inc., a manufacturer of corrugated steel pipes in Alpharetta, Ga., are actively recruiting women to fill the shortage caused by a growth spurt in U.S. manufacturing due to lower energy costs, reshoring a more competitive labor market as Baby Boomers continue to retire. The U.S. Department of Labor estimated last spring that 241,000 factory jobs remained unfilled.
Field Service Operations Have Gone Remote
Across industries, we have left the big buildings, facilities and industrial parks and gone remote. All those remote operations, dispersed businesses and mobile and autonomous equipment need to be serviced. Thus, the service provider has to go to those remote locales. However, just as their customers have changed, the business of service has also changed. The service provider can also leverage technology to monitor, diagnose, and sometimes repair remotely.
Omnichannel Success Depends on Re-tooling the Consumer Goods, Retail Supply Chains, Report Says
Omnichannel represents the biggest growth opportunity for the consumer goods and retail industry, according to a report from EY and the Consumer Goods Forum.
What the Transportation Industry Is Telling Us About the Economy Now
"An army marches on its stomach," Napoleon famously said. While the high-technology sector captures the headlines, the supply chain sector is responsible for the heavy lifting, behind the scenes. The books, clothing, and goods that we purchase are increasingly made in Asia or Mexico; transported through multiple modes including air, ocean, rail and truck; passed through warehouses or cross-dock facilities; and delivered to your home via a last-mile delivery company.
Manufacturers, Importers Losing Millions Due to West Coast Port Labor Problems
Roughly seven months into the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports slowdown with, unfortunately, no end in sight, and manufacturers in just about every industry, from electronics to home goods, are feeling the pain.
Three Emerging Trends in Life Sciences Supply Chain and Serialization
With the Jan. 1 U.S. Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) lot-level traceability deadline now behind us, many pharmaceutical companies are turning their attention to full drug serialization. DSCSA requires that manufacturers mark packages with a product identifier, serial number, lot number, and expiration date by 2017. In that period, highly regulated packaging and distribution processes must be changed; physical equipment must be procured and operationalized; enterprise-wide IT must be implemented; and end-to-end serialization testing with supply chain partners must take place well in advance of the deadline to allow time for any necessary adjustments. Given these multi-faceted complexities, three years is an aggressive implementation time frame.
Auto Sales Expected to Continue Unbroken Recovery Since Worst of Economic Recession
With 2015 off to a good start, IHS Automotive forecasts global automotive sales for 2015 to reach 88.6 million, an increase of 2.4 percent over 2014, continuing an unbroken five-year run of sales recovery and growth from the low point set in the depth of the Great Recession in 2009. However, a slowdown is being signaled with just two of the high-potential BRIC markets likely to see increased sales this year.
To Save Money, Manufacturers Turn from Low-cost Labor to Smart Technologies to Boost Productivity
For the past few decades, the scramble for competitive advantage in manufacturing has largely revolved around finding new and abundant sources of low-cost labor. But with wages rising rapidly in China and other emerging markets, manufacturers worldwide are under intensifying pressure to gain advantage the old-fashioned way - by improving their productivity.
