Large Apparel Retailers, Wholesalers See Rise in RFID Adoption, ROI
The rate of adoption for radio frequency identification in the retail apparel, footwear and accessories market has more than doubled during the past two years, according to a survey of 60 European and U.S. retailers and wholesalers, conducted by management and strategy consulting firm Kurt Salmon.
5 Tips for Moving Beyond the Traditional Warehouse Management System
For decades, companies have relied on warehouse management systems (WMS) to control inventory and material handling processes within their warehouses. Historically, retail distribution centers have been built upon plans that included predetermined transportation routes that outlined the number of stores on a route, what product those stores would get and the quantity and configuration of those products. Consequently, distribution centers have had similar designs, process methodologies and IT infrastructures for years. E-commerce has changed the game, though.
AI Apps May Redefine Brick-and-Mortar Fashion Retail
Picture yourself entering a department store and, instead of wandering around searching for the correct department or product, you are guided by an expert personal concierge. The concierge is not a person, but rather a humanlike smartphone assistant. Whether you want to know "where are women's shoes located?" or "is this dress available in size six?" this concierge is always at hand to assist you. This is what retail shopping may be fast becoming, thanks to the mass proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies.
Touting Global Reach May Not Pay Off for U.S. Companies, Study Says
Projecting an image as a brand with global appeal is often a fundamental aspect of multinational corporations' (MNCs') strategy - a core focus of their marketing campaigns, employee recruitment efforts, and relationships with supply chain partners and others. But some markets and certain consumers prefer local firms, according to research in the Journal of International Marketing.

FedEx Express is expanding its distribution hub at Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport with a €200m ($217.38m) investment in technology and automation, and a €1.2bn ($1.3bn), 30-year lease. The 30-year lease underscores the long-term importance of the European Union to the company's long-term plans. Once completed, FedEx said the upgrade will increase sorting capacity by 40 percent.
Galaxy Note 7 Recall May Threaten South Korea's Reputation, Economy
A former South Korean teacher, Kim Jeong-min was at Narita Airport in Japan this month when he watched a television news report that Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 smartphone was banned on airplanes because it was prone to catching fire. Kim, 58, said he had felt humiliated, as if the non-Koreans in the airport lounge were looking at him.
3D Printer Sales to Double This Year, Analysts Say
There will be a doubling in the number of 3D printers shipped this year, according to analysts. Gartner predicts 455,772 units will ship in 2016, compared to 219,168 in 2015, as firms use the technology to create prototypes, augment manufacturing processes and produce finished goods.
Gartner Predicts Decline of Mobile Apps, Loss of IoT Data
The message at Gartner's recent Symposium/ITxpo was to prepare for a fast move to augmented reality, the decline of mobile apps, a major shift away from web browsing and more. Many users will expect businesses, universities and governments to respond to these shifts, the market research firm said at its annual conference.
Retailers Say They Are Increasingly Turning to Sustainable Cotton
Cotton, the most widely used natural fiber, is considered the world's dirtiest crop because of its heavy use of pesticides - its cultivation accounts for 17.5 percent of global insecticide sales. So in recent years, several apparel and home-goods companies, including Eileen Fisher, Patagonia, and Nike, have used organic cotton, grown by farmers who eschew pesticides and enrich their soil with compost. That's good for the environment but raises another big problem: Organic cotton is too expensive for average shoppers.
Reebok's Liquid Factory Could Change Process and Speed of Footwear Creation
A new generation of footwear manufacturing, spearheaded by Bill McInnis, head of future at Reebok and a former NASA engineer, is allowing the fitness brand to design and create a high performance athletic shoe faster and more efficiently than ever before, the company says.
Tesla Challenges Regulators to Catch up to Driverless Car Technology
According to Tesla's Elon Musk, driverless car technology is a problem that's pretty much solved. As he's made clear numerous times, the regulators need to catch up. They might want to start moving faster, he says, because Tesla isn't slowing down.
