U.S. Trade with NAFTA Partners Hit a High in March, Washington Reports


March 2012 thus became the highest month for North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) trade value since collection of data began with the trade accord's entry into effect on Jan. 1 1994, exceeding $85bn for the first time and topping the previous all-time monthly trade record of $80.8bn in March 2011, according to the U.S. DOT's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

U.S.-Canada and U.S.-Mexico surface transportation trade in March 2012 both increased compared to March 2011, with U.S.-Canada trade reaching $50.1bn, a 2.9-percent increase, and U.S.-Mexico trade reaching $35.7bn, an 11.2-percent increase.
