Commission Increases Road Haulage Permits Considering Intermodal Freight
Representatives from the Belarusian and Italian Commission on International Road Transport met in Rome where an agreement was reached to increase bilateral quotas on road haulage in 2013 and 2014. The parties also discussed the subject of intermodal transport and the prospect of increased use of bilateral communication, and increasing the flow of freight between Europe and Asia.

DHL to Spend $52.5m on Indonesia Positioning
DHL Supply Chain will invest $52.5m over the next few years to further strengthen its position in Indonesia. By 2015, the company plans to increase its transportation fleet by over 100 percent up from its fleet of 370 vehicles at present and grow its staff strength by over 70 percent from its current base of some 2,250 employees.
U.S. Consumers Value Low Prices More than Same-Day Delivery, Survey Finds
Consumers are much more interested in free delivery and lower prices than in the same-day delivery of goods ordered online, according to a survey conducted by The Boston Consulting Group. Only 9 percent of the 1,500 U.S. consumers surveyed cited same-day delivery as a top factor that would improve their online shopping experience, while 74 percent cited free delivery and 50 percent cited lower prices.

ATA Truck Index Posts Best January in History
The American Trucking Associations' advanced seasonally adjusted for-hire truck tonnage index increased 2.9 percent in January after jumping 2.4 percent in December. Tonnage has surged at least 2.4 percent every month since November, gaining a total of 9.1 percent over that period. As a result, the SA index equaled 125.2 (2000=100) in January versus 121.7 in December. January's index was the highest on record. Compared with January 2012, the SA index was up a robust 6.5 percent the best year-over-year result since December 2011.

TNT Express has opened a new hub near Romania's third largest airport, Traian Vuia International Airport, in Timisoara. TNT Romania said its new Timisoara Centre was built to provide operational and technological support specifically for high-performance express services.

It seems like a cruel joke. At the same time we hear about the return of manufacturing jobs from Asia to the U.S., we are inundated with stories about the growth of robotics, which threatens to take away those very jobs for good.
