Google says it will invest a record €13 billion ($15 billion) investment in Finland’s artificial intelligence infrastructure, funding three new data centers, expanding an existing site, and supporting energy projects to that will provide power for the growing demand spurred by the market for AI services.

BBC News reports Google will buy up to half the electricity produced by one of Finland's nuclear power plants as a result.

The U.S. tech giant said in a September 9 press release that this would be Google's largest single investment in Europe and a testament to Finland's leadership in responsibly building AI infrastructure. Google said that the initial construction phase (2027–2028) is expected to contribute an annual average of €3.6 billion to Finland's GDP and support more than 37,000 jobs nationwide.

"Google's decision is a clear testament to our strengths," Finland's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said in a statement.

Earlier this week, TikTok announced a $1 billion investment in Finland to build a new data center in Kouvola, citing Finland’s "strong digital infrastructure, clean energy mix, robust data governance and skilled tech talent."

In October 2025, Google announced a $15 billion investment to build an AI data hub in southern India's Andhra Pradesh state, as part of the tech company's global network of AI centers spread across 12 countries.

The BBC says Finland is an attractive location for data centers because of its cool climate, plentiful low-carbon electricity and relatively uncongested power grid.
