President Donald Trump has extended the withdrawal of the de minimis rule from China to the rest of the world, reports The New York Times.
The rule allowed low-value shipments into the U.S. duty free and without detailed customs paperwork. In May, Trump eliminated the exemption for shipments worth less than $800 (per recipient, per day) from China, by far the largest source of such shipments because of American fervor for cut-price online retailers such as Temu and Shein. But on July 30, Trump signed an executive order that ends the de minimis exemption on imports from anywhere, starting August 29. Now, all shipments will be subject to the tariff placed on their country of origin.
Mr. Trump said the loophole had been used to “evade tariffs and funnel deadly synthetic opioids as well as other unsafe or below-market products that harm American workers and businesses into the United States.”
