Corporate powerhouses, including Ford and Emerson, have already embraced this type of "nearshoring" strategy and opened new production facilities south of the border. While wages play a big role, this trend can be attributed to a series of changing opportunities and challenges currently confronting the global manufacturing supply chain.

Among other things, companies nearshore because of transportation costs, reduced product lifecycles, faster shipping practices and growing local markets.
