Factors Driving Intermodal Growth

Rail intermodal will continue to gain market share in coming years, particularly on shorter haul lanes in the densely populated regions east of the Mississippi, says Tom Sanderson, CEO of Transplace. Reasons cited by Sanderson include service reliability rivaling that of motor carriers, higher fuel prices that make intermodal more competitive with highway transport on shorter hauls, and the ongoing driver shortage.
