The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved the Port of Savannah's permit for a new terminal capable of handling 3.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units annually.

Construction for the $2.3 billion project will start in January 2028, and is expected to wrap up sometime in the mid-2030s. Once it's up and running, the 250-acre terminal will be able to handle the largest container ships.

“We’re excited about the Savannah Container Terminal’s role in our future growth and investment plans to take us to a 12 million TEU [per annum] gateway container port, serving customers in Georgia and our nation with the best infrastructure in a high growth region,” said Georgia Ports Authority President Kevin Price during the annual "State of the Port of Savannah" event on October 14.

The Port of Savannah also has a 200-acre terminal renovation in the works that's expected to add another 1.5 million TEUs in annaul capacity to the shipping hub, by allowing the facility to serve two large container ships simultaneously. The first half of that $1.54 billion project is scheduled to be finished in 2027, while the second half is set for 2028.
