What does shipment “visibility” really mean? Depends on where the shipment is.
In discussions about optimizing supply chain management, the word “visibility” gets tossed around a lot. And it gains even more power when it’s modified by the phrase “end-to-end.” But what does the word really mean? And what kind of visibility do shippers actually want? Turns out the answer depends on the mode of transportation that’s carrying a shipment at any given moment. The ocean leg, in particular, calls for a different kind of visibility than that which accompanies a truck, train or warehouse. On this episode, we explore the distinctions with Ilan Gluck, executive vice president and head of global trade management at Digital Matter, a maker of GPS and internet-of-things tracking devices. We’ll learn about the challenges of following a shipment across modes, and integrating the accompanying data to achieve the Holy Grail of supply chain management: true end-to-end visibility. Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
