Drone technology is in danger of getting ahead of procedures for ensuring its safe operation.

Late last year, errant drones temporary shut down operations at England’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Known more formally as unmanned aircraft systems, these devices are proliferating rapidly, posing new challenges to the safety and security of air operations. So how can they be monitored and controlled? On this episode, we learn the basics from Luke Fox, chief executive officer of WhiteFox, a specialist in drone airspace security. Its technology was designed to detect and stop drone threats before they happen. Terrorism is a concern, of course, but the bigger problem stems from reckless operation by pilots. Fox discusses the state of drone security today, both from a technological and procedural standpoint. Proper systems and controls aren’t universally in place, he says, and until they are, “we’re not going to be able to unlock the full benefits of drones.” Hosted by Bob Bowman, managing editor of SupplyChainBrain.
